Mitchelton’s three Victorian Range wines are varietal expressions of the vineyards climate and soils. The site has proven to be excellent for cultivating fine examples of Victorian shiraz, viognier and riesling.
Mitchelton Shiraz
Mitchelton Shiraz is an opulent, richly flavoured wine melding the best fruit from shiraz vines aged between 12 – 35 years. The older 35 year old vines contribute about 50 per cent to the final wine.
“A savoury vibrant expression of Shiraz in all its glory, it is a wine which melds powerful textures with polished and subtle flavours.”
A celebration of the attributes which have made shiraz so well respected, the wine showcases the quality shiraz fruit cultivated in our vineyard’s climate and geology. Beautiful deep hues of crimson and garnet are complemented by intense aromas of blood plums and dark cherries. Flavours of ripe mulberries and dark chocolate yield to velvety tannins. This provides a textured persistent finish, rare in a wine which is so readily approachable.
Mitchelton Viognier
Mitchelton Viognier signals the pioneering spirit of the winery. Mitchelton was one of the first wineries to plant viognier in Australia. The two viognier blocks at Mitchelton were grafted to the Montpellier Viognier clone in 1990 and 1991 and represent some of the oldest viognier vines in Australia. The grapes produce a lush wine full of varietal flavour and texture.
“This is a wine that is evocative of balmy nights in far-off lands. The pure florals mingle with spices, recalling dusky dreams during twilight hours.”
The wine is highly aromatic of heady flowers and pot pourri evocatively gesturing toward vibrant flavours of stone fruits such as peaches and apricots intermingled with nectarine, spice and ginger. The wine is 90 per cent barrel fermented in four year old (American or French) oak barrels to enhance texture and varietal expression.
Mitchelton Blackwood Park Riesling
Mitchelton Blackwood Park Riesling is an estate classic. For well over three decades now, it continues to be recognised as one of the best examples of the variety from Victoria. The aroma of heady spring flowers heralds a wine of generous yet light flavours of citrus and lemongrass. Zesty and refreshing, the palate is mouth filling and finely balanced with a lingering finish – a Blackwood Park Riesling hallmark.
“Engaging and approachable ; a fun loving friend. Like Spring on the beach; always able to lift the mood.”
The susceptibility of the delicate Riesling flavours to oxygen, always make this a great test for the winery methods and attention to detail. Consistently steady, cool and complete fermentation followed by protection all the way to the bottle
