The Mitchelton Cursive Range (called so because of their distinctive labels) express the innovative spirit of Mitchelton. The wines showcase its heritage in crafting distinctive wine from Rhone varieties.
Mitchelton Airstrip
Mitchelton Airstrip blends marsanne, roussanne and viognier together in a medley of vibrant stone fruit flavours. This is a wine with a good crisp dry balance and texture. The wine is named after a vine block on the estate which was once a landing area for light aircraft. Airstrip is a well structured wine which balances the unique qualities of the individual varieties.
“A muscular, layered wine underpinned by a sleek build, a genderless wine of intricate personality which evolves over time as different flavours meld and interplay.”
The marsanne provides the core mid palate, the muscle power of he blend. The viognier provides the wines lively aromatic lift and palate complexity. The roussanne adds stone fruit flavours and the framework which pulls the different varietal personalities together, to create a complex full-bodied style wine.
Mitchelton Crescent
Mitchelton Crescent blends the popular shiraz with the much less common mourvedre and grenache varieties. The Crescent blend focuses on texture and a seamless finish. The wine is named after the crescent shaped sandbar which is home to the old shiraz vines groomed to provide fruit for the wine. These grapes display intense, plummy characteristics.
“A dark complex personality who is fine boned, graceful and probably wears a lot of dark colours; perhaps a touch gothic or bohemian.”
Crescent is all about texture. The key here is blending towards the shape, texture and seamless finish of the wine. Post secondary fermentation Crescent components spend 16 months on lees maturing in 30% French Oak. This adds further complexity to this intensely rich and spiced wine.
Mitchelton Parish
Mitchelton Parish explores the potential of pairing shiraz and viognier. The viognier provides the wine’s signature lifted aromatics, complexity and luscious mouthfeel.
“Vibrant and seductive, the flavours and aromas heighten the senses calling to mind rich silken fabrics and bold colours. An alluring wine with a dangerous streak.”
The shiraz for this wine comes from heritage blocks such as the “1969 Block”. The gnarled vines are situated adjacent to the great Goulburn River but are non-irrigated. This means the block produces a mere one tonne per acre of intensely concentrated berries. Viognier adds musky, crème brulee fragrances to the wine’s cherry ripe and pudding flavours. All framed by melted chocolate like tannins.
