At over 100km inland from the nearest coastline, the region of Central Victoria has a continental climate of warm hot growing season and cold winters. The winter rains give adequate sub-soil moisture while the spring rains help with good flowering. Intermittent rains during veraison and ripening along with the warm dry climate through into autumn give a good progression of flavour development and allow the winemakers and viticulturists to patiently watch for the regional complexity typical of Central Victoria.
The prime viticultural area within central Victoria elongates 80 km from Heathcote in the west to the Great Dividing Range in the east. Two significant viticultural sub-regions of Central Victoria represent tremendous potential, comprising four different soil types and varying elevation.
The Nagambie Lakes Region extends along the Hume Freeway from Avenel to Longwood and follows the Goulburn Valley Highway to Nagambie and the historic Goulburn weir. The region is known for its water as the majestic Goulburn river is its life-blood. The regions growing reputation as a wine and food destination is attracting attention from across the country.
